(Ita-Eng) Le mie zolle per il futuro di tutti / My soil means natural future for y'all

Quante volte da piccino Niccolò avrà osservato il nonno quando tirava su l'acqua dal pozzo, mentre pigiava l'uva per fare il vino, lo stesso vino che Niccolò continua a produrre per l'uso familiare; oppure lo osservava mentre stanco continuava a lavorare quel terreno che tutti in paese chiamavano con un nome dispregiativo, un termine che in dialetto significava che quel pezzo di terra non avrebbe dato mai frutti e mai avrebbe potuto essere coltivato. Ma il nonno di Niccolò era un visionario, un uomo caparbio, una di quelle persone alla quale se dici "guarda che non puoi farcela", tu lo inviti a nozze perchè lui, invece, troverà la maniera per riuscirci. Così infatti è stato e in quei 6 ettari, dove poi è nata anche la casa della loro famiglia, Niccolò ha fondato l'azienda agricola il cui nome lo ha dedicato proprio alla fatica che suo nonno ha fatto per riuscire a coltivare quello che per tutti sarebbe stato un "campaccio" di terra impossibile da coltivare; il nonno aveva capito che ogni terreno è vocato a dare vita ma la crea se sai rispettarlo. Così è per Niccolò ancora oggi nelle campagne forlivesi all'interno del suo "Podere Campaz".

How many times as a child Niccolò spied on his grandfather as he pulled up the water from the well, as he pressed the grapes or when tired he went on to work that land that everyone in the village called with that derogatory name , a term that in local dialect means a piece of land that will never bear fruit and cannot be cultivated. But Niccolo’s grandfather ' was a visionary, a stubborn man, one of those people to whom if you say "you can’t do it" looks like a wedding invitation, because he will find a way to do it, definitely. So it was and in the 6 hectares where also the house of their family was built, today Niccolò works his land on the farm whose name he dedicated him to the effort that his grandfather did to be able to till what for everyone was a "wasteland", impossible to work by obtaining crops; but the grandfather was able to understand that every land is called to give life, if you know how to respect it. So that's what happened and happen for Niccolò still today, in his (in the local dialect so called) "Podere Campaz". (this is to mean "Wasteland Farmhouse")

Seguendo Niccolò per tutta la mattinata con la mia fotocamera scopro quanta energia abbia: non si è mai fermato e io appresso a lui nemmeno :) Comprendo anche quale sia il cuore della sua idea di agricoltura dove il rispetto per l'ecologia viene ancor prima della lavorazione del terreno. L'agroecologia può essere una scienza, un movimento ideologico, una pratica; mi rendo conto di come nel caso di Niccolò rappresenti indubbiamente tutti questi aspetti oltre a una fortissima vocazione che lo anima quotidianamente. La sua comunità è fortunatissima ad avere vicino un produttore così; uno che non può fare a meno di essere com'è, anche a discapito del suo maggior guadagno, quando serve, perchè prima ancora della sua terra il puro è proprio lui.

Following Niccolò all morning with my camera I find out how much energy he has. He never stopped during the morn spent together and me too I went on to follow him :) But only now I understand what the heart of his idea of agriculture is in which respect for ecology comes even before the tillage; agroecology can be a science, an ideological movement, a practice, but I realize that in the case of Niccolò it is a vocation and we are very lucky to have a producer like him close by us; a peasant who can not help but be as he is, even if in my opinion he does it at the expense of his earnings, because he is pure as his land is.

"Vedi Furio la valutazione del paesaggio nel quale mi inserisco e del terreno che mi ospita e che lavoro, hanno un'importanza basilare per me; io sono di passaggio e sento il dovere di lasciare la mia terra a chi verrà dopo di me in condizioni migliori di come l'abbia trovata io" Mentre parliamo ci troviamo nel nuovo casale dove vive con la moglie e che è riuscito ad acquistare insieme ad altri 4 ettari di terra che coltiva seguendo i principi del rispetto per il terreno e l'ambiente, per le persone che si alimenteranno con il suo cibo e per il futuro di quel suolo.

"As you can see, Furio, the evaluation of the landscape in which I am inserted and of the land that hosts me and that I work, is of fundamental importance for me; I am passing through this world and I feel the duty to deliver my land and this place to everyone who will come after me, in best conditions". We are now in the new farmhouse, where he lives with his wife and which he managed to buy together with other 4 hectares of land that he cultivates following the principles of respect for the soil and the environment, for the people who feed on his food and for the future of his ground.

Stiamo camminando tra le sue tantissime biodiversità; Niccolò si ferma di colpo e voltandosi verso di me letteralmente mi spara un concetto chiarissimo "Il contadino deve tornare a fare il custode e questo significa non solo proteggere le biodiversità piantandole e facendo semenza, ma implica anche il fatto di custodire il territorio, la sua morfologia, conoscerne la storia, seguire la vocazione della sua terra con tecniche naturali e rispettose del suolo".

While we are walking among its biodiverse crops, Niccolò turns towards me and "shoot" me a very clear concept "The farmer must go back to being a custodian and this means not only protecting biodiversity by planting and making seeds, but also implies preserving the territory, its morphology, the vocation of its land with natural and soil-friendly techniques".

In effetti, per seguire il suo progetto di azzerare i consumi per rendere altamente sostenibile la sua produzione, così come le sue galline si alimentano con lo stesso cibo naturale che coltiva, lui nella sua terra usa principi di permacultura creando molte varietà orticole differenti, così come legumi e mais, arrivando ad applicare la tecnica di pacciamatura per la quale l'uso di acqua è pressochè inesistente.

Just as his chickens feed on the same natural food that he grows, following his plan to eliminate for example consumption of water to make his production highly sustainable, he uses permaculture principles in his land and cultivates many different horticultural varieties, as well as legumes and corn, coming to apply the mulching technique where the use of water is almost non-existent.

L'esperienza onesta con la terra credo abbia arricchito enormemente Niccolò; sento molto chiaramente quanto quell'emozione che provava da bambino in quel "campaccio" sia ancora oggi la stessa e lui ne è perfettamente consapevole, a tal punto da coinvolgere gruppi di bimbi nell'esperienza rurale più magica che per un piccino ci sia: quella dell'arnia delle api, della loro perfetta organizzazione e del miele.

I think the honest experience with the land has greatly enriched Niccolò; i can deeply perceive how that emotion that he felt as a child in approaching his grandfather sharing with him the rural moments in that wasteland here so called "campaz", is still the same kind of emotion today and he is perfectly aware so far as involve of children in the more magical experience than for a child exists: the bee hive, their marvellous and perfect organization and the honey.

Ha le idee talmente "biodinamiche" che anche il contadino che lo aiuta quest'estate è un fatto nel quale entra in gioco la sua anima più genuina. Quando gli ho comunicato che mi sarebbe piaciuto scrivere due parole sul quel contadino, gli ho anche chiesto di mandarmi un messaggio con qualche notizia e Niccolò mi ha scritto questo:

"Lui si chiama Martin, viene dal Ghana dove ha famiglia con tre figli, due femmine e un maschio e i due grandi si stanno laureando. Martin ha cinque ettari di anacardi dove tra le file coltiva anche un po' di colture per autoproduzione familiare; lui si è diplomato in agraria in Ghana e viene in Italia per sette mesi all'anno da 19 anni. Quest'anno con me si trova bene perché facciamo molti lavori manuali come è abituato a fare anche nella sua terra in Ghana. Quì c'è un po' di tutto da seguire quindi il lavoro non è mai lo stesso, questo perché non si espone all'uso di agrofarmaci la terra ed è tutto più faticoso. Martin è uno di famiglia... È una persona che si fa voler bene è assunto regolarmente e per tenerlo faccio i veri salti mortali perchè non tutti i giorni quì c'è così tanto da fare, ma noi ci siamo troppo affezionati a lui, alla sua storia, ai suoi figli e lo sto aiutando a cercare altri lavori perchè possa restare in Italia il più a lungo possibile in questo anno critico"

Niccolò has such "biodynamic" ideas, that even hire the peasant who helps him this summer it's been a decision in which his most genuine soul have came into play. When I told him that I had would like to write two words about him too and then I asked him to send me a message with some news on the peasant, Niccolò wrote me these words:

"His name is Martin, he comes from Ghana where he has a family with three children, two girls and a boy, the two grown-ups of them are graduating. Martin has five hectares of cashews in which he also self produce some crops for the family food support ; graduated in agriculture in Ghana and has been coming to Italy for seven months of the year for 19 years. During this year he feels good to me because we do many manual jobs as he is accustomed to doing also in his homeland in Ghana. A little of everything to do so the work is never the same, this happen because i don't use agrochemicals for crops protection. Martin now is one of my family and to keep him with me i'm trying of bending over backwards for him, because he has his regular on a paycheck; but anyway it's worth because we are literally fond of him, of his story and of his children"
