Ron è un uomo che non si fermerà a guardare un problema attecchire. Cresciuto nella prigione alimentare del centro-sud di Los Angeles, Ron Finley conosce la mancanza di prodotti freschi nella zona. Sa bene com'è guidare 45 minuti solo per avere un pomodoro fresco.
"So basically, if you want to meet with me, don't call me if you want to sit around in cushy chairs and have meetings where you talk about doing some shit, where you only talk about doing some shit. If you want to meet with me, come to the garden with your shovel so we can plant some shit!"
Ron is a man who will not sit still and watch a problem take root. Having grown up in the South Central Los Angeles food prison, Ron is familiar with the area’s lack of fresh produce. He knew what it’s like to drive 45 minutes just to get a fresh tomato.

His dreams have been reshaped into a thriving garden of pumpkins, peppers, sunflowers, kale and corn. But more than being a gangsta gardener, Ron is a community leader. Determined to change South Central Los Angeles from food desert to food forest, he wants his actions to be educational, inspiring, and nutritious. He wants kids to grow up with the option of healthy food, instead of fried, fattening staples. He wants to sweep up and transform his street, his hood, the city of LA and communities everywhere.

Nel 2010, ha deciso di piantare la propria frutta e verdura su una striscia di terra lungo una strada conosciuta come una strada di parcheggio auto, tra la sua casa e quel viale. Ha incoraggiato chiunque ad aiutarsi usando la terra del giardino pubblico. Tuttavia, dopo che un reclamo è stato presentato alla città di Los Angeles, Finley ha ricevuto un mandato di arresto anche se non ha estirpato e sgombrato immediatamente il giardino. In 2010, he decided to plant his own fruits and vegetables on the strip of land known as a parkway between his house and the street. He encouraged anyone to help themselves to the public garden. Yet after a complaint was filed to the city of Los Angeles, Finley received a warrant for his arrest if he did not trim and clear the garden immediately. As it turns out, the city of Los Angeles has jurisdiction over parkways and planting produce gardens on public property was, at the time, illegal. But Finley fought back, noting that planting produce, especially on an empty plot of land in the middle of a food desert, should not be a punishable act. “Why wouldn’t you want people to realize they can feed themselves?” he asks. “Do you need somebody to take a spoon and hold your mouth open to feed you? Apparently. But our mouths are being held open and they’re feeding us poison.”
