Paolo is Maître Savonnier and follows the production of his completely natural soap assisted by his wife in their small mountain workshop in Valle Stura (Cuneo province)

"Abbiamo creato un'azienda agricola che coltiva, raccoglie e trasforma piante officinali e aromatiche di alta quota, tra i 1300 e i 2200 mt di altitudine, operando nelle nostre montagne di Pietraporzio; con gli olii estratti diamo vita ai nostri saponi di alta montagna"

"We have created a farm that cultivates, collects and uses high altitude medicinal and aromatic plants, between 1300 and 2200 meters above sea level, operating in our mountains of Pietraporzio; with extracted oils we create our high mountain soaps"

Usando esclusivamente tecniche attente all’equilibrio dell’ambiente, come l'uso di cavalli e non di attrezzature meccaniche, tutte le piante vengono prima curate a mano e sempre manualmente raccolte nel periodo in cui il contenuto delle sostanze officinali è più alto (momento balsamico).

Using only techniques that pay attention to the balance of the environment, such as the use of horses and not of mechanical equipment to work the land, all the plants are first hand-cured and always manually picked when the content of the medicinal substances is higher (balsamic moment).

Durante il nostro incontro mi svelano che il loro segreto consiste nell'utilizzare piante spontanee

che vengono tutte essiccate, alcune di loro in essiccatoi costruiti in legno, per conservarne i preziosi principi attivi ed ottenere prodotti di elevata qualità, rispettando i metodi dei nonni.

During our meeting they reveal to me that their secret is to use wild plants

which are all dried, some of them using wood-built dryers; this drying process it's necessary to preserve the precious active ingredients and obtain high quality products, respecting the methods of the grandparents

La trasformazione delle piante in estratti avviene solamente secondo metodi naturali e cioè per distillazione in alambicco, mediante corrente di vapore, per le piante con alto contenuto di olii essenziali, oppure mediante macerazione in glicerina vegetale o in olio di mandorle.

The transformation of the plants into extracts takes place only according to natural methods and that is by distillation in alembics, by steam flux; for the plants with a high content of essential oils the transformation takes place by maceration in vegetable glycerine or in almond oil

Paolo mi spiega che storicamente i contatti tra l'alta Valle Stura e la città di Marsiglia si perdono nella notte dei tempi e sono soprattutto legati alla transumanza.

Paolo explains to me that historically the contacts between the high Valle Stura and the city of Marseille are lost in the mists of time and are above all linked to the transhumance of the herds.

Testimonianza di questo forte legame tra i pastori provenzali e quelli cuneesi della Valle Stura è l’Ecomuseo della Pastorizia che si trova a Pietraporzio.

Evidence of this strong bond between the Franco Provençal shepherds and those shepherds of Cuneo province living in the the Stura Valley is the pastoralism Ecomuseum located in his Pietraporzio village

E' sempre la gente che porta con sè il sapere e lo restituisce alla comunità che grazie alla conoscenza manuale alle tecniche e alla natura circostante è giusto che non smetta di continuare a tramandare quel sapere. Come mi raccontano in laboratorio, la storia della gente dei loro territori vedeva fortemente in uso presso le popolazioni alpine la cosiddetta "lessiva"; questo metodo di lavaggio dei panni utilizzava le ceneri come elemento detergente e smacchiante, ma non ne permetteva l'uso sul corpo. Già anticamente, proprio per il limitato utilizzo della lessiva, in montagna le famiglie "facevano il sapone in casa", perlopiù con lo scarto dei grassi animali aggiungendo spezie locali profumate e quindi poteva essere usato anche sul corpo; probabilmente il continuo scambio tra le popolazioni vallive e la Provenza durante la transumanza estiva, ne ha favorito la conoscenza e l'uso delle ricette.

It is always the people who bring knowledge with them and give it back to the community which, thanks those knowledges and the surrounding nature, it's fair to continue to pass on that knowledge. As they tell me in the laboratory, the history of the people of their territories saw the so-called "lessiva" strongly in use at the Alpine level; this method of washing clothes uses the ashes as a detergent and stain remover, but does not allow them to be used on the body. In ancient times, due to the limited use of the "lessiva", in the mountains the families "made soap at home", mostly with the waste fats of animal adding fragrant local spices and then also used on the body; probably the continuous meetings between the valley shepperds and the Provence shepperds, during the summer transhumance, favored the knowledge and the use of the recipes
